The New York Times is seeking an experienced editor of political news to drive daily news coverage of the 2024 presidential campaign each weekday morning.

The ideal candidate will bring a peerless understanding of the rhythms of campaign coverage and of the political news cycle, excellent news judgment, nimble creativity in generating story ideas, and a proven track record of leading reporters. An ability to turn around news quickly is important, as is being able to anticipate how that news could play out and develop in future cycles.

We are looking for a leader ready to work closely with powerhouse reporters, but also one who can guide more junior hands on quick-turn news. The ideal candidate is a politics native who stays abreast of our competitors and is determined to beat them. Being able to identify news that rises and launch reporters is critical. We are looking for a leader who is committed to The New York Times’s strategy, standards, workplace culture and mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Start each day with a plan for the day’s coverage and then quickly adapt it, depending on overnight developments, to push ahead with Times scoops or match and advance stories by our competitors.
  • Work in close partnership with other editors on the team to assign and edit the daily report, anticipate coverage needs and plan future coverage.
  • Identify and respond quickly to breaking news.
  • Handle edits of all sorts, including quick cuts, write-throughs, live stories and lead-alls.
  • Be flexible and nimble in anticipating potential problems, addressing unexpected issues and finding solutions.
  • Help identify potential stories and anticipate our needs.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Impeccable news judgment.
  • Experience running news coverage of national politics.
  • Experience managing reporters.
  • Excellent editing skills.
  • At least five years’ reporting and editing experience at a major publication or media organization.
  • Tact, sensitivity, equanimity and poise under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Tremendous competitive drive and stamina.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to colleagues within the department and across the newsroom.
  • A willingness to adapt as the newsroom’s needs evolve.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $160,000.00 and $180,000.00.
