States Newsroom seeks a Stateline newsletter producer/breaking news reporter

Stateline seeks an enthusiastic and entrepreneurial journalist to take charge of our newsletters and write breaking news stories for a national audience.

Stateline, the nation’s first and most comprehensive outlet covering state policy news, is expanding its footprint and joining States Newsroom, the nation’s largest nonprofit journalism network of state government news outlets.

The Newsletter Producer/Breaking News Reporter will edit contributions from all 50 states into a comprehensive daily roundup of the most important and interesting state policy news of the day, serving an audience of lawmakers, policymakers, key interest groups and a general audience. You’ll write and send our morning and weekly newsletters, then report and post breaking policy stories online.

The producer/reporter will work in collaboration with Stateline’s editors to report short items, and longer stories, time permitting, based on the morning’s news. You’ll be working an early shift (Eastern time), often with little immediate oversight and the independence to make important decisions about reaching and informing readers.

This person will also help curate our home page with stories selected from among States Newsroom’s local news sites and outside partners. Our team is primarily based in D.C., but this position can be fully remote within the U.S.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

Day-to-day duties include:

  • Read, cull and edit the most interesting and important news from state policy around the country
  • Write and send Stateline’s morning and weekly newsletters
  • Track newsletter metrics and make recommendations
  • Stay in touch with editors about potential daily stories to be reported and written
  • Use social media to amplify our content
  • Assist in the management and curation of Stateline’s home page

QUALIFICATIONS:

One or more years of professional experience is preferred, but recent college graduates with strong internships and/or college reporting experience will be considered.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Strong news judgment
  • Interest in and some knowledge of state policy trends
  • Commitment to coverage that includes and serves diverse voices and communities
  • An ambitious and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Proven track record of being able to work independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Fast and accurate reporting and writing skills
  • Experience engaging with audiences
  • A collaborative nature that thrives on accountability and feedback

Authorization to work in the United States is required. All States Newsroom employees are required to be fully vaccinated within 30 days of hire.

Salary:  The minimum salary for this role is $60,000 and rises with experience.
