As a general assignment reporter for Culture, you will cover stories across multiple disciplines on our desk. You will write in-depth features about fresh topics in this space and help cover tentpole events such as award shows. Your stories may take the form of traditional service and reported articles as well as explainers, essays, visual-first stories, reviews, features and profiles.
Sophisticated interviewing and writing skills are a must, along with the ability to contextualize a subject within a larger cultural framework. You should be comfortable with both tone and point of view in discussing a diverse range of subjects and subcultures.
This role requires precision and an understanding of deadlines. Finally, you must be a collaborator. This is a desk full of reporters and critics who are the undisputed experts in their fields. Many stories will require teaming up with others in order to deliver the best story we can. An affinity for teamwork and a willingness to share expertise, resources and glory will be important keys to your success.
Responsibilities:
- Reporting and writing multiple stories per week as needed, a mix of feature writing, trend pieces, reported essays, criticism and news.
- Covering culture across various disciplines, including but not limited to: Television, Theater, Movies and Podcasts.
- Participating in live coverage of tentpole events such as the Tony and Emmy Awards in the form of live blogging and/or on-the-ground reporting.
- Collaborating with visual editors on new story forms and multimedia.
- Contributing to our regular pieces of service journalism and pitching new forms and topics.
- Ensuring stories are inclusive of a diverse set of perspectives and voices.
- Adhering to the Times’s editorial standards.
Basic Qualifications:
- At least five to seven years of journalism experience, including work as an arts and culture reporter.
- A willingness to collaborate and the ability to partner with colleagues across a large team.
- A dedication to The Times and its journalistic mission.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Creativity and a desire to experiment with new story forms.
- A curious mind that can take readers to unexpected places.
Salary: The annual base pay range for this role is between $104,684.83 and $125,000.00.
