Job Description:
The New York Times Video Unit is looking for a Video Journalist focused on open source news video verification and reporting. You will be part of an award-winning video team in New York focused on live journalism and video reporting.
The video journalist will work with our Daily News Video team to stay on top of the news of the day, helping vet, verify and edit user generated content (UGC). You will also produce immediate updates that take our audience to the scene for ongoing stories, and will look for opportunities to advance the news with scoops. You will work in collaboration with the Visual Investigations team on hard-hitting storylines and with other desks across the newsroom to identify newsworthy angles through UGC and open source content. You will also publish video material on-site in a variety of formats, including linear video and visually driven text articles. Your work can entail setting up and monitoring live video feeds and clipping agency video.
You will have a track record in open source reporting, verifying videos, analyzing visuals, and uncovering new information. We’re looking for candidates who thrive under the pressure of newsroom deadlines and have experience juggling multiple projects at any given time.
Responsibilities:
- Find, verify and acquire user-generated content.
- Report and script video stories.
- Produce for linear video and interactive formats.
- Use news wire services such as AP and Reuters to acquire material.
- Setup and monitor live feeds, and adding text and graphics.
- Write succinct copy for video assets (titles, summaries, tags).
- Monitor the news day across core areas of coverage.
Basic Requirements:
- Either 3+ years of journalism experience in a newsroom (digital or broadcast) or 3+ years of experience as an open-source researcher, reporter or investigator at a news outlet or NGO
- Apply open-source research skills, including: sourcing audio-visual evidence from a variety of platforms; geolocation and chronolocation; and basic satellite imagery analysis.
- Basic video editing and production skills are required.
Preferred Requirements:
- Familiarity with the video production process
- Strong writing and researching skills.
- Make quick decisions under intense deadlines in a high-pressure newsroom setting.
- A knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright and usage issues for visuals.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends.
- Collaborative team player with a positive attitude.
Salary: The annual base pay range for this role is between $104,684.83 and $118,000.00.
