EO Media is seeking a full-time, investigative and solutions journalism reporter to complement our seasoned and dynamic news staff and help us expand our readership and footprint across Central and Southern Oregon.
We want a reporter who knows how to dig, likes combing through public records, engages multiple sources and wants to work on long-term and investigative projects.
This reporter needs to understand the importance of audience engagement and should expect to embrace that across multiple platforms. The person also must have a strong work ethic, organizational skills and the ability to accept constructive criticism.
Job responsibilities include:
- Writing long- and short-form people-first stories about complex and divisive community issues with an emphasis on potential policy change and community solutions. Use solutions journalism principles to create content that is engaging, thought-provoking and outside the confines of daily journalism.
- Collaborating two to four times annually with civic organizations to plan and execute community forums for audiences of 100+. Report package of stories on forum topic in advance of event. Serving as a forum moderator, leading community discussion and offering readers a personal connection to local news.
- Using public records law to obtain agency datasets otherwise unavailable to the public and using data reporting techniques to clean and analyze data for insights about trends, disparities and inequalities.
- Using web-based tools like Flourish, Datawrapper and others to visualize data in compelling and engaging ways including charts, graphs and basic maps. Coordinate with photographers and graphic artists to produce photo and graphic art elements.
- Preparing stories for web publication, including SEO headlines and drafting social posts. Tracking story performance with web analytics tools like Google Analytics and Metrics for News and leveraging insights to influence future reporting strategy.
- Practicing engaged journalism techniques to enhance reporting, including community surveys and soliciting reader feedback.
- Staying up-to-date on community issues across beats and identifying opportunities for collaboration with other reporters to add depth and complexity to stories within their beats. Identify and execute or collaborate on opportunities for in-depth projects on timely topics.
- Occasionally report general assignment and breaking news stories
We want a reporter who has the ability to find never-before-told stories and tell those with videos, audio through social media channels. The job is based at The Bulletin in Bend, which is part of the EO Media Group, a fourth-generation, family-owned operation.
