The Capital Times, a digital-first newsroom in Madison, Wis., is seeking an experienced reporter to pioneer a new beat covering the burgeoning technology industry as well as the digital spread of information and misinformation. This is a reporter who knows how to shape a beat, identify trending social media topics and doggedly seek and report the truth about false information that could sway public policy.

As one part of this role, the reporter will be among journalists testing a tool developed through a National Science Foundation grant for the purpose of tracing mistruths to original sources and tracking their influence. This position is grant funded for 18 months, with the potential for future advancement.

This journalist will scour social networks, partisan media, political statements, press releases, proposed legislation and other sources of questionable information to identify misleading narratives that are shaping public opinion and affecting the democratic process. The journalist will expose falsehoods circulating in Madison and Wisconsin, regardless of the source’s political party, ideology, economic status or popularity.

The Technology Reporter also will partner with the Local Economy Reporter to cover breaking news and enterprise stemming from the Madison area’s tech industry, which is among the fastest-growing in the U.S.

Madison is home to more than 250,000 people, the Wisconsin state Capitol, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a growing biotech industry and a vibrant restaurant and entertainment scene. Located between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona on an isthmus, the city also boasts many opportunities for outdoor recreation on the water, on its many miles of bike paths and in abundant city and Dane County parks.

For this position, three to five years of professional experience in a daily news operation is preferred. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field is required.

Benefits offered include medical, dental, and vision insurances; company-paid life and long term disability insurance; company matched 401(k); employee assistance program; and paid time off, sick, and holiday time. Pre-employment background and drug screenings apply.

The Capital Times is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. We are committed to maintaining a workforce that accurately reflects our audience and expands our voice. Women, minorities, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
