Nathan Payne, executive editor of the Traverse City Record-Eagle, a daily paper in Michigan, will be leaving to join Kaiser Health News as a regional editor. In his new role, he will oversee Kaiser Health News’ newly-launched rural desk.

He will also help edit freelancers and Kaiser Health News’ Midwest team.

Payne also serves as regional editor of the Record-Eagle’s parent company, CNHI. Previously, Payne has held the post of features editor at the Record-Eagle. He was also granted a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University in 2018.

Since then, he has built a partnership between the Record-Eagle and Report for America.

“This is a bittersweet moment for me,” Payne said. “The Record-Eagle has been a labor of love for me for the better part of a decade, and I will be forever thankful for time I spent working with extraordinary coworkers throughout CNHI.”
