The following excerpt announcement was sent out by The New York Times assistant managing editor Sam Sifton:
I am delighted to report that Emily Weinstein is the new editor of Cooking and Food. Emily is more than deserving of the promotion. She possesses exceptional news judgment and editorial sensibility.
Emily Weinstein came to The Times in 2007 as a web producer, working on Dining, Home and the Arts sections, and was one of the multimedia producers on our Emmy Award-winning series “1 in 8 Million.” In 2012 she became a senior staff editor on the Food desk, where she played a pivotal role in the launch of Cooking, while also collaborating with reporters, critics, designers, software developers, photo editors and video journalists to create large-scale multimedia projects.
In 2016 she was named a departmental deputy for that work.
Since then, Emily has played an invaluable role in the development of new writers for The Times, and in the expansion of our staff, coverage and reach. And she has of course played a crucial part in the tremendous success of Cooking as a standalone subscription product of The Times.
That work, and her marvelous Cooking newsletter, “Five Weeknight Dishes,” will continue as she enters this exciting new chapter of her career, where she will continue to report to me. Please join me in congratulating her.
