It’s a compelling time to cover Canadian politics. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won re-election in September by a thin margin and faces myriad challenges in a minority parliament. His opposition, and the world, is closely monitoring his ability to resuscitate Canada’s economy after the pandemic, navigate a looming debt crisis and manage a proliferating real-estate bubble.
As such, Bloomberg News is seeking an experienced and dynamic reporter to own coverage of government and policy from Ottawa. The right candidate will have a proven ability to break news, develop sources and write compelling enterprise that captures the state of play in Canada’s capital.
Taking charge of our coverage of finance, trade and energy policy, you will write with flair, speed and authority, unpacking complex developments for a global audience. You will spot emerging trends and connect dots across issues. As importantly, you will collaborate with reporters on other teams and regions, including our Washington bureau.
We’ll trust you to:
- Develop a broad network of contacts in the government and opposition.
- Chase stories with tenacity and energy, and break news quickly –- never sacrificing quality and accuracy.
- Build out front-page stories by writing influential, data-driven and insightful pieces.
- Produce scoops and high-impact enterprise by connecting dots and contextualizing developments for our audience.
- Chart and visualize data to help your stories stand out.
- Simplify the complex, and create narratives accessible to both market professionals and casual readers.
You’ll need:
- 5 or more years of experience at a major news organization.
- An ability to work in an energetic, dynamic, and fast-paced environment.
- Strong news judgment.
- An unwavering commitment to accuracy.
- A collaborative approach and desire to work across beats.
- Proficiency in French is a plus.
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in Finance, Economics, Journalism or related field.
