John Carter, a senior editor at the South China Morning Post and a founding staff member of Market News International, passed away in the United States on Friday after a short illness.
He was 66.
Carter joined the Morning Post in the summer of 2018 and was initially jointly in charge of a team of more than 10 reporters and production editors focusing on the world’s second-largest economy.
He became a journalist in November 1978 with International Moneyline and later at Money Market Services. At International Moneyline, he wrote articles on Washington-related financial topics for a weekly newsletter. With Money Market Services, he helped design and develop the financial news service that eventually became Market News International.
He also wrote stories on Washington financial topics for Money Market Services’ Telerate pages.
In June 1984, he became Washington bureau chief for the newly formed financial newswire Market News International, a position he held for just shy of a decade, before becoming European managing editor based in Frankfurt, Germany.
In February 2006 he took up the Beijing-based role as Asia managing editor. This position spanned six years before he began splitting his time between Beijing and Washington as global managing editor overseeing 13 bureaus and a team of 50.
A nearly 34 years with Market News International, he left in January 2018, and after accepting a position in May of that year, Carter moved to Hong Kong to head up the new economy desk at the Morning Post.
