Bloomberg’s Jacqueline Simmons and Flynn McRoberts sent the following staff announcement on Monday:
We’re excited to announce two new bureau chiefs in the U.S.: Shelly Banjo will oversee our bureaus at 731 Lex and Princeton, while Catarina Saraiva takes over as bureau chief in Dallas.
Shelly, who has kept Bloomberg ahead on TikTok and so many other tech stories, will bring her reporting and storytelling skills to her new job as New York City bureau chief. Her keen eye for breaking news and analysis (she’s a Gadfly alum) and her ability to establish collaborations across the newsroom make her ideal to build off the legacy of Jason Kelly, who has joined the QuickTake streaming news network. She’ll also partner with deputy NYC bureau chief Shartia Brantley to continue elevating the bureau’s profile through events and newsmaker interviews. Shelly will serve as a player-coach, shaping our coverage of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut while continuing to leverage her tech and Equality Task Force expertise. In doing so, she will lead our efforts to expand coverage of NYC’s transformation in the post-pandemic world.
Shelly’s work with our New York and New Jersey bureaus will free up Stacie Sherman as she transitions from New Jersey bureau chief to deputy managing editor for U.S. bureaus. Stacie’s leadership through Covid and the season of protest and unrest made it clear we need to deploy her skills on a broader scale. Stacie will now help lead efforts for all the U.S. bureaus, determining when we need to
deploy resources for breaking stories and quick-turn thematic pieces that span teams and bureaus.
Catarina Saraiva, an Eco team reporter who has deftly captured the Fed’s impact on everything from the workplace and inequality to the pandemic response, will become our new Dallas bureau chief. While continuing her coverage of the Fed and labor market, Catarina will guide the bureau as it chronicles the airline and other industries’ long recovery from the Covid recession. The move follows the expert leadership of the Dallas bureau under Susan Warren, who has moved over to Bloomberg Opinion and continues to be an advocate for the nine-member crew. Catarina will also continue her work as a member of the global Equality Task Force.
Please join us in congratulating Catarina, Shelly and Stacie on their new roles.
