The New York Times won three and ProPublica both won two Gerald Loeb Awards, considered the top award in business journalism, on Thursday.
The Times won the Loeb for breaking news for “Crash in Ethiopia.” Those that worked on the stories about the Boeing crash included Hadra Ahmed, Hannah Beech, Selam Gebrekidan, David Gelles, James Glanz, Thomas Kaplan, Natalie Kitroeff, Jack Nicas, Norimitsu Onishi, Dionne Searcey, Kenneth P. Vogel and Zach Wichter.
The Times also won the feature Loeb for “Planet Fox” by Jonathan Mahler and Jim Rutenberg.
And the Times won for investigative reporting for “Exploited” by Michael H. Keller, Gabriel J.X. Dance and Nellie Bowles.
ProPublica won the Loeb Award in the personal finance and consumer reporting category for the “Turbo Tax Trap,” by Justin Elliott, Paul Kiel, Ariana Tobin and Lucas Waldron.
MLK50: Justice Through Journalism and ProPublica won in the local category for “Profiting from the Poor.”
The Financial Times won the Gerald Loeb Award for international coverage for “WhatsApp International.”
The reporters on the story were Mehul Srivastava, Tom Wilson, Tim Bradshaw and Robert Smith.
The Tampa Bay Times won the award for visual storytelling for “Clear Takeover” by Tracey McManus and Eli Murray.
The Seattle Times and The Wall Street Journal tied in the beat reporting category Loeb Award.
The Times won for “Boeing’s 737 MAX Crisis” by Dominic Gates, Mike Baker, Steve Miletich and Lewis Kamb.
The Journal won for “How PG&E Burned California” by Katherine Blunt, Russell Gold, Rebecca Smith, Renée Rigdon, Yaryna Serkez and Dave Cole.
Kaiser Health News and the Washington Post tied in the commentary Loeb.
The Kaiser Health News writer was Elisabeth Rosenthal for “America’s Broken Health Care System.”
Geoffrey A. Fowler of The Post won for “A Secret Life of Your Data.”
The NBC News investigation unit won the Loeb in the video category for “Zone Rouge’: An Army of Children Toils in African Mines” by Cynthia McFadden, Christine Romo, Lisa Cavazuti and Bill Angelucci.
Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting and PRX won the Loeb in the audio category for “Amazon Behind the Smiles.”

And in the explanatory category, the Loeb Award was won by Fortune and Kaiser Health News for “Death by a Thousand Clicks” by Erika Fry and Fred Schulte.
An honorable mention was given in the explanatory category to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel for “Dairyland in Distress.”
