Brittany Mayes, Razzan Nakhlawi and Jay Wang are the participants in The Washington Post’s inaugural Opportunity Year program, designed to help staffers draft new career paths while contributing their unique skill sets to other departments.

Graphics reporter Mayes will take her data visualization skills to Local’s Social Issues team, where she will make use of her reporting skills and craft stories out of the 2020 Census with guidance from Social Issues editor Annys Shin.

Social media producer Nakhlawi will be joining the National Security team as a researcher. He will also be partnering with future domestic terrorism reporters to work on breaking news and enterprise stories, using open-source intelligence techniques and social media analysis.

Homepage editor Wang will be joining the newsroom product team as a product editor, working on initiatives that will improve The Post’s workflow, including improvements to WebSked, the integration of Methode and Ellipsis and the creation of guides for using The Post’s tools and understanding its processes.

The Opportunity Years will begin after the election.
