The New York Times won six Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism awards from the Society of American Travel Writers, five for the Travel section and one for T magazine.
The judges noted “unpredictable content, rigorous research, polished writing and lush, striking photography are hallmarks of this outstanding travel section.”
T, the New York Times Style Magazine won gold in the Cultural Tourism category for Pico Iyer’s “A Journey Into Greece’s Land of a Thousand Stories.”
Other awards included:
- In the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalist of the Year category, Sebastian Modak, the 52 Places traveler last year, took the bronze award. Sebastian also took bronze in the Foreign Travel category for “In Uzbekistan, Encounters With a Dead Goat. But in a Good Way.”
- The team of Shannon Sims, Todd Heisler, Phaedra Brown, Stephen Hiltner and Rumsey Taylor took silver in the Multimedia Single Work category for “Discovering Cuba, an Island of Music.”
- And Steve Macone won an honorable mention in the Personal Comment category for “Ice Fishing is Fun!“
