Kat Downs Mulder has been named managing editor/digital at the Washington Post. In this role, she will help ensure that the newspaper is at the forefront of change in an increasingly evolving digital news environment.
Her new role begins Oct. 19.

“Kat has been a leader for years in the digital transformation of The Post. at can focus on the urgent needs of the present, down to the smallest detail, even as she keeps her eye on our larger and longer-term goals. Her work has brought her into regular and close collaboration with just about every Post department. Few in our organization have the breadth and depth of her digital experience.”
Currently, Mulder is vice president of product and design, overseeing the Post’s product strategy. In this role, she leads a team focused on developing and refining the Post’s website, apps, internal tools and new products to expand the audience for its journalism.
She previously led the paper’s award-winning Graphics department for almost five years.
Mulder added:
“I’m excited to return to the newsroom and look forward to leading this talented team of innovative journalists. Having led product the last three years, I’ve gained a deep understanding of our subscribers and potential subscribers, and the content and experiences they value. I’ll bring that experience to this role with the ultimate goal of engaging readers more deeply and continuing to aggressively grow our subscriber base.”
Apart from the Post, Mulder has also worked at Georgetown University and Northwestern University Medill School. She was also a web producer at the Baltimore Sun and a rich media intern at USA Today. She has also served as an editorial intern at Carolina Woman, Inc.
She was also a marketing and design intern at Preation.
Mulder is a B.A. in journalism and mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
