The Washington Post has promoted Lucio Villa to the role of design editor. In this role, Villa will help the Post’s team advance digital storytelling on long- and short-term projects.

He will also be collaborating across the newsroom, mentoring designers while still leading his own projects.

Villa joined the Post last year from the San Francisco Chronicle where he held the post of interactive producer. Before that, he was teaching at UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. He has also served as news applications developer at tronc.

He was also Heartland fellow at the Institute for Justice and Journalism. Additionally, he has also held the posts of photojournalism intern and was part of a photojournalism fellowship at the Chicago Reporter.

Villa has also held the posts of photo editor and SEO/online marketing intern at the Daily Titan and DIMEX, respectively.

In 2019, he was also named to Editor & Publisher’s “25 Under 35” list and is also a board member of the NAHJ D.C. chapter and was one of the NAHJ curriculum co-chairs for the NABJ/NAHJ 2020 virtual conference.
