Reporter Deena Winter joined the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal this week to cover retail residential real estate, homebuilding and manufacturing.

A story on its website states:

Tell us about your journalism background: I did my first summer internship at a newspaper in Bismarck, N.D., 30 years ago, and have been working in the field since, starting with a part-time gig taking sports scores at the Associated Press while in college. Since then I’ve worked for everyone from the Northwood Gleaner to the Denver Post. But much of my career was at the Bismarck Tribune, before I moved on to the Lincoln Journal Star in Nebraska, where I covered city hall. I also worked for Nebraska Watchdog as an investigative reporter before moving in 2015 to Minnesota because my husband got a job teaching journalism at Bethel University. I briefly did contract work for American Public Media’s investigative unit before taking a job as regional editor for Southwest News Media’s eight newspapers in the southwest Minneapolis suburbs, my last stop before arriving here.

What generated your interest in working for the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal? The business beat is one of the few beats I’ve never done specifically in the past three decades, and I’d like to learn some new skills. I’ve covered government most of my career, but it’s more challenging to write about private businesses, who don’t have to answer your questions or respond to an open records request. So that’s more of a challenge.
