Mark Vasche, the editor of the Modesto Bee in California, writes Sunday about the complaints the paper has received for its economics coverage and his response to them.
Vasche writes, “As for negative headlines and stories, though, well, I’m sorry. Downplaying the severity of the current economy, or burying those stories on inside pages, isn’t going to make things better. In fact, doing that could even make things worse.
“We believe the more information people have — be it good or bad, and without a doubt most of the news is bad these days — the better equipped they will be to make intelligent decisions about their daily lives.
“So we’re not going to sugarcoat the hard reality of today: It’s an extremely grim situation out there, for the private sector, for the public sector, and especially for everyday men and women who are scared about what tomorrow may bring.”
