Reuters reporter Yeganeh Torbati has joined ProPublica, where she will be covering the federal government.
She covered immigration for Reuters and joined its Washington bureau in 2015. From 2011 to 2013 she covered Iran’s politics, economy, foreign policy, and nuclear program for Reuters, through spot reports, features, analysis pieces, and award-winning investigations.
Her coverage included Iran’s conflict with the West over its nuclear ambitions, shifts in Iranian society, and how sanctions affected the economy.
She was part of a Reuters reporting team that uncovered the $95 billion financial empire controlled by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in 2013. The Reuters series received numerous awards including the Gerald Loeb Award, the Overseas Press Club Award, the European Press Prize in Investigative Reporting, the SABEW Best in Business International Investigative Award, and the Deadline Club’s Daniel Pearl Award for Investigative Reporting.
Torbati was also part of a Reuters reporting team that won a National Press Club Award in 2017 for a series of stories on a prisoner swap between Iran and the United States.
