Jason Karaian has joined Quartz as senior European correspondent, based in London, it was announced Wednesday by Quartz Editor-in-Chief Kevin J. Delaney.

His appointment is effective immediately.

Karaian comes to Quartz from the Economist Intelligence Unit, the research arm of The Economist Group, where he was a senior editor covering the financial services industry. He also served as industries editor for The Economist’s annual The World In publication, and has made frequent appearances in broadcast media and chaired conferences across the region.

“Jason is a highly talented journalist and economist whose reporting on European businesses will further deepen Quartz’s global coverage,” Delaney said in a statement. “He brings a fluency with numbers and finance that’s in line with our newsroom’s obsession with data and charts—the result will be more smart, unique analysis for our business readers.”

Karaian is Quartz’s second staff journalist in London, and is part of an expansion of its reporting resources globally. Heather Timmons in July had joined Quartz in Hong Kong from The New York Times.

Prior to the Economist Intelligence Unit, Karaian was the deputy editor of the European edition of CFO magazine, the publication for senior finance executives. Before moving to London in 2002, he was an economist at a boutique macroeconomic consulting firm in Chicago.
