National real estate writing contest open for entries

January 12, 2010

The National Association of Real Estate Editors is now accepting entries for its two prestigious writing competitions — NAREE’s 60th Annual Journalism Competition and the Third Annual Bruss Real Estate Book Awards.

NAREE’s 60th Annual Journalism Competition is aimed at staff writers, columnists, editors, and freelancers covering mortgage finance, commercial and residential real estate, green building, home design and other real estate topics. This prestigious real estate journalism competition has recognized excellence in writing, reporting, and editing since 1949.

NAREE has earmarked $8,000 in award money as the journalism contest continues into its sixth decade of recognizing excellence. A total of 50 first-and-second place awards will be announced. Entries will be received from daily newspapers, weekly business newspapers, trade, investment and shelter magazines, commercial real estate publications and websites.

The Presidents Award of $1,000 will go to the best overall individual entry.

Entry deadline for the journalism competition is March 1, 2010, for work published or aired in 2009.

The competition recognizes leading journalists from daily metropolitan newspapers; weekly business newspapers; mortgage publications; trade, shelter, business and personal finance magazines; wire services; and broadcast and online news outlets.

Individual and team honors have included topics such as mortgage fraud, commercial real estate, investing and sustainable urban design. All professional journalists may enter with entry forms on www.NAREE.org.

Winners will be recognized in categories including: “Best Residential Report in a Daily Newspaper,” “Best Report in a Weekly Business Newspaper,” “Best Commercial Real Estate Magazine,” “Best Blog,” and “Best Website.”

Winners will be invited to NAREE’s elegant awards ceremony at NAREE’s Annual Journalism Conference in Austin, Texas, June 2 to June 5, 2010. The conference offers professional development sessions and press briefings with cutting-edge real estate trends.

Authors of real estate books are encouraged to enter NAREE’s Bruss Books Awards competition. Entry deadline is Feb. 1. Real estate books released for sale in 2009 are eligible. Books covering investments, architecture, home buying, mortgages and other topics are eligible. Winning authors will be announced at NAREE’s Austin conference.
