Gannett biz journalists now gone: The list so far

December 5, 2008

As mentioned earlier, Gannett Co. newspapers across the country have been offering buyouts and laying off employees this week, including a number of business journalists.

Here is the list we’ve compiled so far:

1. Longtime Louisville Courier-Journal business reporter Bill Wolfe took a voluntary buyout. He had been at the paper more than 20 years, mostly in business news. A big sci-fi fan, Wolfe plans to write books.

2. Business reporter David Schepp of The Journal News in Westchester County, N.Y., was laid off. He covered workplace, business of health and Rockland County.

3. As noted earlier, Cincinnati Enquirer business editor Carolyn Pione is now gone from the paper, a layoff casualty. She had been business editor for more than two years.

4. Michelle Jones, the Pensacola News Journal business editor, was laid off Tuesday. She was five weeks into a maternity leave.

5. Linda Hildebrand, who wrote the Trouble Shooter consumer column that ran in the business section for the Asbury Park Press, is now out of a job. Hildebrand was also an editorial board member.

6. Gary Haber, who had been at the Wilmington News Journal in Delaware for three years as a business reporter, was laid off. Haber covered manufacturing and the business of health care.

If you know of any others, e-mail me at croush@email.unc.edu and I will add them to the list.
