Financial Times news editor Peter Spiegel is coming to the United States to head its news operation in his home country, reports Jack Blanchard of Politico.

Blanchard writes, “Three well-placed sources say Spiegel has been offered the promotion after he was almost poached by former BBC boss James Harding for his new media startup Tortoise. The details of Spiegel’s new role are still being finalized, and it’s unclear yet what this means for the FT’s current U.S. managing editor, Gillian Tett. If confirmed, Spiegel will join columnist Janan Ganesh and former lobby journo Kiran Stacey, who have also joined the FT’s growing U.S. operation.”

Spiegel has been the news editor since May 2016. Before that, he was Brussels bureau chief for nearly six years.

He has also worked at The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Roll Call and the Los Angeles Times.
