Fortune’s digital staff votes to join union

Fortune magazine’s digital staff voted 20-3 earlier this week to join the NewsGuild of New York.

The staffers issued a statement that read, “We look forward to joining the 41% of the staff already represented by the existing union agreement and working with management to agree on a contract that covers all editorial workers equally.”

In March, the union organizing committee pushed for voluntary recognition in an effort to “safeguard our rights as workers and sustain the magazine’s reputation going forward,” according to a joint statement from union leaders. But Fortune management refused to recognize the bargaining unit.

The union then pushed for a secret ballot vote, which was held earlier this week.

Businessman Chatchaval Jiaravanon bought Fortune magazine from Meredith Corp. for $150 million at the end of last year.
