China bureau chief named WSJ international news editor

July 5, 2008

Rebecca Blumenstein, the current China bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, will become the paper’s international news editor in New York later this year, according to an internal memo from managing editor Robert Thomson.

Rebecca Blumenstein and Mei FongThomson wrote, “I am delighted to announce that Rebecca Blumenstein, currently China bureau chief, is to be promoted to International News Editor, overseeing our global network of bureaus and correspondents and reporting to Nikhil Deogun. Rebecca’s promotion, which takes effect at the end of the year, is a recognition of her extraordinary work in Beijing, where she has led an extremely capable team of journalists, whose coverage of economic, social and political events in China has been outstanding in its breadth and quality. Until Rebecca returns to New York, Mike Allen will be very ably assisting Nik.”

Prior to going to China in the summer of 2005, Blumenstein served as chief of the Journal’s New York technology group, which has covered the historic mergers and changes in technology that have recast the U.S. telecommunications industry. Before that, she was the group’s deputy chief and a reporter covering AT&T Corp. and WorldCom Inc.

Blumenstein joined the Journal in 1995 as a reporter in the Detroit bureau, where she covered General Motors. She began her journalism career at the Tampa Tribune, and then later moved to Gannett Newspapers and Newsday, where she covered breaking news and the New York State legislature.

She is a graduate of the University of Michigan.Â
