Capital New York spoke with Chris Collins, senior executive editor of breaking news at Bloomberg News, about his career.
Here is an excerpt:
CAPITAL: You started out as an intern at Bloomberg in 1998. Did you ever expect to still be with the company some 16 years later?
COLLINS: I started straight out of university as an intern and had little idea of what I was walking into. Bloomberg was relatively unfamiliar to me and I had minimal experience of the media or markets, and hence low expectations of my ability to survive. There were plenty of smart people to listen to and learn from, and as Bloomberg News grew, I was lucky enough to get opportunities to write, edit and then lead in Europe, Asia and now New York. Fast forward 16 years and I’m still here.
CAPITAL: How has Bloomberg changed during your time with the company? How does it need to change, still?
COLLINS: Bloomberg now has a significantly bigger footprint in both developed and emerging markets and a much broader audience—from clients on the trading floor to online readers and magazine subscribers. What hasn’t changed is the start-up mentality.
