Bloomberg News announced management changes in its Washington bureau on Wednesday.
Winnie O’Kelley was named executive editor for all U.S. government, legal and regulatory stories; Craig Gordon will be managing editor for Washington news and Jonathan Allen was named Washington bureau chief. In addition, Michael Shepard and Nicholas Johnston were named new deputy managing editors and will work together with current deputy managing editor Jeanne Cummings to run the coverage.
“These moves underscore our commitment to being the fastest and most definitive word on Washington and all the economies, industries, companies and markets it affects,” said editor in chief Matt Winkler in a statement.
O’Kelley joined Bloomberg last year from the New York Times, where she worked for 20 years and most recently served as deputy business editor, managing the Times reporting of the 2008 financial crisis and its aftermath. In her expanded role, she will also oversee Bloomberg’s D.C. financial crime, U.S. legal and U.S. financial regulation teams. She will report to senior executive editor Laurie Hays and split her time between Washington and New York.
Prior to joining Bloomberg News last year, Gordon was the managing editor of Politico where he helped run the daily news operation. He will run the Washington newsroom day-to-day and drive the bureau’s coverage, reporting to O’Kelley.
Allen joined Bloomberg News in January from Politico, where he was White House bureau chief. He’s the co-author of the best-selling book on Hillary Clinton, “HRC.” As Washington Bureau Chief, he will continue to report stories and will work with teams in the bureau on developing story ideas that leverage Bloomberg’s unique assets. He will report to Craig Gordon.
As deputy managing editor, Shepard will work closely with Gordon to oversee Bloomberg’s coverage and work to ensure visibility of the bureau’s best reporting. He joined Bloomberg in 2011 from the Washington Post.
Johnston will continue to serve as the team leader for First Word DC and in his new role as deputy managing editor, his remit will expand to ensure closer collaboration with the breaking news desk and all of Bloomberg’s properties in Washington, including Bloomberg Government, Bloomberg BNA and Bloomberg Media Group. Previously a congressional and White House reporter, Johnston will report to the First Word team in New York while working closely with Gordon in Washington.
