Dan Beyers, who has been with The Washington Post for the past 28 years, has been hired by CoStar to be its executive editor.

Beyers will start on April 2 and will oversee CoStar’s real estate news effort in the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom. His last day at The Post is Friday, March 23.

CoStar, which is based in the DC area, has hired a dozen reporters and editors across the country in the past six months as part of an expanded effort to cover real estate news. And it has 10 openings in its news operation.

Beyers joined the Post in 1990 as a reporter in the Howard County bureau and eventually moved to the Maryland desk, where he ran government and political coverage.

In 2000, he was named technology editor on the business news staff during the height of the dotcom boom and oversaw the paper’s award-winning coverage of the bust. He later served in a variety of positions, including day editor and local business editor.

In 2010, Beyers became founding editor of Capital Business, a Washington Post subscription-based local business publication. After a five-year run, he became a business assignment editor.

A lifelong resident of greater Washington, Beyers served as city editor for a chain of daily newspapers in Northern Virginia before his arrival at The Post. He also was a reporter for the defense trade journal Defense News.
