Craigslist founder Craig Newmark is looking to bring back Julia Angwin as editor in chief of tech news site the Markup weeks after her abrupt departure, reports Suzanne Vranica of The Wall Street Journal.
Vranica writes, “In a tweet Friday afternoon, Mr. Newmark said that Sue Gardner, the site’s co-founder and executive editor, and Jeff Larson, co-founder and managing editor, were ‘no longer with the Markup.’ He also said he was ‘hopeful an announcement about the future of The Markup will be made soon.’
“Ms. Gardner and Mr. Larson declined to comment. Ms. Angwin referred questions to Mr. Newmark, who couldn’t immediately be reached. Mr. Newmark has donated about $20 million to the website.
“Ms. Angwin, a former Wall Street Journal and ProPublica journalist, was forced out of the Markup—of which she one of three co-founders—last month following a clash with Ms. Gardner. She said at the time that Ms. Gardner had changed the mission of the newsroom to one based on ‘advocacy against the tech companies.’ She said Ms. Gardner wanted the Markup to be a cause rather than a publication.”
