Xavier Sanchez profiles San Diego Union-Tribune business reporter Phil Molnar, who became a reporter after time working in marketing.
Sanchez writes, “At the Union-Tribune, Molnar mainly covers real estate, but reports on other topics, too.
“‘You can pretty much tap him for any story and he’ll jump in, you can tap him into politics, crime… he’s really good at social media and helping other people learn that,’ Business Editor Diana McCabe said. “‘What sets Phil apart from a lot of people is that he loves being a journalist.’
“Molnar, now in his early 30s, transitioned from marketing to journalism as his career developed.
“A marketing major at Northern Michigan University, he held jobs in the field in Chicago and San Francisco before deciding to pursue a masters degree in journalism at New York University.
“While Molnar admits that journalism is not the highest paying choice of a career — he regrets lacking the resources to pay for trips home to Michigan when he wants or to pay down student loans quickly — it is one for which he has passion.”
