WSJ seeks a senior publishing editor

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a full time senior publishing editor to join its real-time newswires team, which focuses on business, finance, markets and economic indicators across. Based in New York City, this senior-level editor must be experienced in meeting the needs of financial professional investors, seeking real-time delivery of news, analysis and insights.

The successful candidate will have top-notch editing and management skills, along with the news judgment to assign, curate, and package content for a sophisticated, professional audience. The editor must understand the demands of a real-time news cycle and be comfortable making fast, independent decisions, while also being proactive with reporters and editors to push for the best possible work prior to publication.

Senior publishing editors are expected to direct the work of other editors and reporters on the newswires shift, and coordinate across the entire news organization – including with reporters for newswires and WSJ, stringers, technicians and colleagues across the globe. Strong communication skills and an understanding of how to collaborate in a team environment are essential, as is a deep knowledge of workflow, publishing systems and house style.

You will:

  • Identify both breaking news and advance expected business and financial news stories likely to resonate with newswires readers.
  • Ensure pre-written and real-time copy is of a high standard and camera-ready for immediate publication to both newswires as well as WSJ.com
  • Closely work with publishing colleagues across the newsroom, locally and with the WSJ digital hub and business and finance beat chiefs to ensure speedy delivery of camera-ready copy and swift updates with context, particularly on fast-breaking news.
  • Lead the normal newsflow of the NY newswires desk, which may include helping to deal with volume and stories involving standards questions, as well as monitoring competitors’ output.
  • Assign and oversee editors’ work and help them make progress.
  • Assist in coaching individual editors, identifies training opportunities and participates in training presentations as needed.
  • Are comfortable with compiling and interpreting data.
  • Will demonstrate command of newsroom editorial tools, metadata and internal coding for newswires.
  • Will uphold Dow Jones standards and ethics.

You have:

  • A demonstrated ability to quickly and sharply edit for grammar, style, sense, jargon, accuracy, structure, balance and fairness.
  • A depth of financial knowledge to quickly assess and prioritize headline writing and editing of breaking news coming in through multiple channels.
  • An ability to lead by example and work well across teams.
  • The confidence to make coverage decisions and organize colleagues to follow through.
  • Strong collaborative skills with reporters and editors from other groups.
  • A proactive nature for proper coding and tagging for headlines and different types of content for different channels.
  • Proficiency in using technology to enhance speed and efficiency of monitoring news, checking facts, handling urgent stories and connecting across teams.
  • A tendency to remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and time while handling multiple responsibilities.
