Washington Business Journal seeks associate editor

The Washington Business Journal is seeking an associate editor to join our editing team. The associate editor will manage and edit content across all platforms. You might be assigning a print feature story one minute, posting a digital story the next and working on both the print and digital components of our special projects in between.

We operate in a fast-paced newsroom, and you must be able to move from one task to the next seamlessly.

Print edition work will involve assigning and editing stories, such as our Executive Profile or How I features; working with our design team and photographer; proofing pages; collaborating with our Data Editor on our List packages; writing strong print headlines; and ensuring we produce high-quality content at all times. Knowledge of InDesign a bonus.

Digital work will involve producing copy and editing for our Morning Edition email newsletter, which arrives in readers’ in-boxes at 8 a.m. (you must be comfortable working early hours); editing and posting stories from our beat reporters; writing strong, clickable headlines and SEO headlines; making sure solid art is published with all stories; generating innovate ideas for digital content and ensuring we produce high-quality content at all times. Ability to navigate our custom content management system is a must. Video production and editing are a bonus.

Special project work will involve generating ideas for our special sections, including Best Real Estate Deals, Minority Business Leaders, Women Who Mean Business and others. We will look to you to generate nominations, coordinate judging, vet honorees, conceive print and online coverage, assign and edit stories; and oversee production of special section, working closely with our creative and photography teams.

At least five years of reporting experience and two years of editing experience are required, along with a bachelor’s degree.
