Vox seeks economic policy reporter in DC

January 23, 2017

Posted by Chris Roush

VoxVox.com is seeking a reporter to cover how economic policy affects workers, families, and businesses across America.

With a new administration in Washington, and at a moment of great social, economic and political division, Vox is expanding its policy team in order to deliver more ambitious and deeply reported stories for its audience — stories that will help drive the policy debate in Congress and the White House, and among workers and voters around the country.

This is not a typical economics beat; we’re not looking for someone to write up the monthly jobs reports. We want a standout reporter who can articulate the biggest economic challenges facing the nation; analyze how policy changes might address those challenges; and illustrate how those challenges and changes affect people. This reporter must be able to weave academic research, policy analysis, and human narrative together to help our audience see how often-dry Washington debates can lift workers, widen inequality, or slow growth.

We prize energy, collegiality, and a drive to help our team get better. We’re looking for a writer who can juggle deep projects with quick-turn analysis — and root everything she or he writes in strong reporting.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • At least four years of experience in reported policy journalism, including at least two years of full-time economics coverage
  • Wide knowledge of economic topics, including the latest academic literature in key areas, the government statistics that underpin policy debates, and the machinations of policymaking in the federal government and the Federal Reserve
  • A proven ability to see connections between how economic policy changes affect Americans in their daily lives
  • A familiarity with earnings statements and other corporate disclosures, and an ability to use them to illustrate broader trends in economic policy
  • An entrepreneurial spirit

If this describes you, please send: a cover letter, three clips of stories (either linked to in your cover letter, or as additional pages in your cover letter document), a resume, and three story ideas you would pursue this week if you were on staff at Vox.com, no later than Monday, January 30.

This position will be based in Washington, D.C. To apply, go here.
