Reuters seeks Ottawa correspondent

Reuters-LogoReuters is looking for an ambitious and dynamic journalist to join our team in Ottawa.

The successful candidate must have a proven track record of breaking exclusive news and of longer-format reporting and writing, as well as an aptitude for multimedia story-telling. He or she will have strong source building skills and the ability to execute original initiative stories from an Ottawa base while working with colleagues across the country, region and world.

The right person will provide our clients with insightful reporting on the country, just as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government navigates a path between a more protectionist U.S. and its own pro-trade/-immigration policies.  Canada, a major energy producer, is not immune to pressures: its cost-intensive oil sands region is facing an exodus of foreign investment while domestic politics have suddenly tangled pipeline policy. Meanwhile, an influx of refugees has inflamed far-right groups while an economic recovery has done little for Aboriginal groups, which are struggling with an epidemic of adolescent suicides.

This is a great opportunity for a self-directed individual who will be able to handle both longer-term investigative efforts and breaking news. Fluency in French is a must.

Required skills and experience:

  • Strong writing and reporting skills, and experience in multi-media story-telling
  • Ability to generate great story ideas, including enterprise pieces
  • Proven ability to build sources, break news and set the news agenda
  • Fluent French required
