Reuters seeks ag commodities columnist

Reuters is looking to appoint an agriculture analyst/columnist to join its highly respected team of analysts and columnists covering all aspects of the global commodity markets. This is a high-profile position on a small team that has a very big impact. Other columnists cover the energy and industrial metals markets as well as commodities in the Asian region.

The role would suit a mid-career professional with a deep insight into agricultural markets: supply/demand fundamentals, government policy, and how derivatives markets work. The successful candidate must have a deep knowledge of the markets for grains, livestock, softs and land, in the United States and around the world.

Substantial previous experience as a journalist, analyst, policy analyst or broker/trader covering farming markets is essential.The analyst must be able to set their own agenda, generate investable/tradable/actionable insights for our customers, write quickly and well, all with minimal supervision. Analysts are expected to speak at conferences and engage with clients to raise the company’s profile.

The role will probably be based in Chicago, but other locations including New York or London are possible for the right candidate.

Qualifications
– Minimum 8-10 years experience as an analyst, journalist, broker/trader or similar in agricultural sector
– Ability to write quickly, clearly, concisely and with authority for specialist as well as general professional readers to tight deadlines
– Understanding of futures, options and swaps markets and derivatives’ price formation
– Understanding of markets in grains, livestock, soft commodities and agricultural land
– Understanding of physical and cash market fundamentals
– Ability to generate a steady stream of new ideas for columns which get ahead of the curve and offer actionable, tradable and investable insights to our customers
– Presentation skills (PowerPoint, etc.)
– Familiarity with Excel and other tools for producing charts, graphics and illustrations
– Familiarity with all the main data sources in the farm sector and ability to analyze them in depth to generate data-driven market insights
