New Mexico daily seeks business reporter

Farmington Daily TimesThe Farmington Daily Times, a Gannett Company and part of the USA TODAY NETWORK is seeking an innovative, motivated, creative and experienced business Reporter with broad knowledge of the energy industry. The main responsibilities include daily coverage of business issues and writing for two monthly special sections.

The person we are looking for will be able to quickly write breaking news stories to post online, write updates as information becomes available and then turn the story for print. The editor also will be expected to work on longer pieces examining factors important to the local economy, including the oil, natural gas, coal and power generation industries, and the region’s economic relationship with the Navajo Nation. Candidates should also have knowledge of the national regulatory landscape.

We are a seven-day paper with a strong digital presence. The editor will be responsible for daily Facebook, Twitter and video postings, and other digital journalism.

The business editor is responsible for writing budgets each month for the two special sections (Energy and Four Corners business journal), communicating with the designers in Phoenix on cover stories and featured art, writing headlines, editing copy and answering designer’s questions throughout the process.

Although hours will vary according to the news, the position includes a once-a-month Saturday shift where police reporting could be required. We put a premium on personal integrity, teamwork, problem solving, a strong work ethic, accountability and winning.

Responsibilities:

  • Creates storytelling that accurately informs, entertains and engages specific audiences and platforms through the use of metrics. Works toward becoming the community’s leading voice in area of expertise.
  • Connects with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.)  Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
  • Works with content strategist and audience analyst to evaluate what’s working and what’s not, and develops ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.
  • Collaborates with content team to provide all appropriate elements for stories (i.e. photos, videos and graphics). Captures basic photos and video as needed.
  • Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
