Minneapolis-St. Paul Biz Journal seeks data reporter

The primary mission of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal’s data reporter is to dig deep into available business data to find, report/investigate and write compelling and important local business news and stories while also compiling many of the publication’s highest-profile and consistently award-winning investigative research projects and Lists.

That includes researching and analyzing public-company performance, mergers and acquisitions, CEO pay and performance, and board member activity and compensation, among other projects.

It also includes breaking news online when its released or discovered in public documents and/or filings. The data reporter also will gather information for some Lists by directly surveying companies and via other research methods.

Duties

– Generate cover stories based on business data, including reports on the largest public companies, executive compensation and others that are new or that the Business Journal publishes annually, plus investigative reports based on that or other data.

– Report and write digital-first or print news stories on executive pay, executive changes or other breaking document-sourced news when the information is filed.

– Write stories that analyze business data and data-generated news, primarily about public companies and banks, to tell the reader what it means.

– Conceptualize at least five new list ideas each year and provide input each year on developing the next year’s editorial calendar (including timing of research projects based on when data is available).

– Be the MSPBJ point person for any company-wide data projects

– Maintain, update annually key Business Journal databases on public companies and their executives

– Create or use surveys, public documents and other appropriate resources to compile two to three lists per month.

– Assist reporters with research on stories on an as-needed basis including providing them with source suggestions, data-generated story ideas, but also could participating in research for stories and specific projects if requested.

– Work closely with editors, designers and other editorial staff on upcoming projects to ensure compelling and cohesive presentation.

Skills

Strong news judgment, news analysis and news writing skills; computer data-management applications; and proven ability to work with databases and spreadsheets to find patterns and stories. Also, highly organized, self-motivated, versatile and detail-oriented.

Experience

Five years as a journalist with a track record of reporting on business data, especially public-company filings with the SEC and bank filings with various regulatory agencies.
