The Battle Creek Enquirer seeks a skilled and aggressive journalist who’s eager to mine our local economy and the local job market for stories that matter to readers.

The Income and Opportunity beat is rich with opportunity for an enterprising reporter. With its signature cereal industry, its bustling manufacturing base and dominant nonprofit sector, greater Battle Creek is a community hungry for resurgence.

We seek a reporter who will connect the dots for readers, producing high-impact storytelling on issues of vital interest to the 25- to 45-year-olds who are essential to our community’s economic progress. Topics may be as varied as deep dives into what’s hurting our shrinking middle class to stories about people pursuing their own version of the American dream.

We’re looking for candidates who know how to develop sources among business leaders, economists and other experts, but who writes first and foremost for the audience. We want someone who can demonstrate social media savvy, has an understanding of metrics and knows how to reach and connect with specific audiences.

If you have these qualities, please send a cover letter, resume and five to seven samples of your premier work to Michael McCullough, general manager and executive editor, at mmccullo@gannett.com. Hard copies may be mailed to 77 E. Michigan Ave., Suite 101, Battle Creek, MI 49017.  We’re prepared to move quickly to fill this important position.
