Indianapolis Biz Journal seeks tech reporter

Indianapolis Business JournalThe Indianapolis Business Journal is looking for a curious, outgoing reporter to cover the burgeoning tech industry in Indianapolis and surrounding communities. This reporter will write about technology for the larger business community, which means explaining what are often complex, nuanced ideas, systems and technologies to an educated audience but one that doesn’t necessarily know SaaF from IoT from agile software development.

Therefore, we need a smart, savvy writer who grasps complex topics quickly – but isn’t afraid to admit when he or she doesn’t understand a new product or technology or its funding. And we’re looking for an aggressive reporter who wants to always be first in a competitive news environment. IBJ’s tech reporter writes a weekly newsletter plus daily stories and once-a-week enterprise.

IBJ offers a chance to work in an affordable capital city with a metro-area population of more than 2 million people but in a smaller newsroom with plenty of opportunity to make a big impact. We expect the technology reporter to regularly write for the front page, to host an annual Technology Power Breakfast and be the go-to person for tech news in our city. And there’s a lot of it. Forbes recently ranked Indianapolis fifth on its list of cities creating the most tech jobs, Smart Asset ranked it the fourth-best city in the nation for women in technology, and VentureBeat has named Indy to its list of four cities outside Silicon Valley that are home to the most interesting tech activity. The rankings come in part because Indianapolis is home to the largest Salesforce operation outside its headquarters in California and landed the first Infosys tech center in the U.S. But it’s also about homegrown startups, a new internet-of-things lab and several strong research universities.

Required skills:

  • Experience with both breaking news and enterprise
  • Ability to work independently and generate story ideas
  • Curiosity about technology, apps, gadgets and more
  • Experience promoting stories and reporting with social media
  • Ability to shoot photos and video
  • Fast, thorough writing

IBJ is an award-winning, locally owned media organization that publishes two daily email newsletters; eight industry-specific, weekly email newsletters and a weekly print newspaper. We sponsor a Power Breakfast series of industry-specific events as well as recognize young and accomplished professionals in a number of business categories. Visit us at ibj.com.

To apply, send a resume, cover letter explaining why the tech beat appeals to you, and three to five published stories to editor Greg Andrews (gandrews@ibj.com) and managing editor Lesley Weidenbener (lweidenbener@ibj.com). Please include links to multi-media work if you have it.
