The Detroit Free Press, a Gannett Co., Inc. company, is seeking an energetic and sophisticated reporter to own coverage of startups and entrepreneurs in Detroit and across Michigan. Must be urgent, social media savvy and possess a deep passion for storytelling.

Detroit has become a center of entrepreneurial activity as various organizations, private investors and others work to create new businesses and also to rebuild Detroit as the next Silicon Valley. The same is true for various urban and population centers across the state, including Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor. The beat is fertile ground for an enterprising reporter who revels in alternative story-telling – with a strong emphasis on leveraging video and social media assets. Along this vein, the business reporter will mine the beat for stories and characters that resonate with readers, translate across multiple platforms and engage new and existing digital audiences.

KEY DUTIES:
Creates storytelling that accurately informs, entertains and engages specific audiences and platforms through the use of metrics. Works toward becoming the community’s leading voice in area of expertise.

Connects with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.).

Works with content strategist and consumer experience director to evaluate what’s working and what’s not, and develops ongoing plans to better satisfy audience needs.

Collaborates with content teams to provide all appropriate elements for stories (i.e. photos, videos and graphics).

Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the Free Press brand.

Coaches and mentors less-experienced journalists.

Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
