Cincinnati.com and the Enquirer are looking for a dynamic Daily News & Business Coach to join our newsroom.

Main Function:

You coach and edit the stories of the day with the most potential for impact with readers. Your goal is to be ambitious with that story today — to go deep, to do watchdog, to tell a great story in the first 24 hours. You work with others to identify those stories from every team in the newsroom, from sports to watchdog to features. You also supervise the 6-member business news team and ensure we are competitive in reality and in perception. You use all reporting and story tools to do your work, from text to live video and social media.

Job Details:

  • You are relentless to get to the bottom of daily news questions – news and context. Lead the pursuit of and beat the competition on every angle. You work with every coverage team across the newsroom.
  • You lead the business team to break news and produce hard-news coverage about 9 Fortune 500 companies, major financial institutions, major developers, health institutions and job development and workplace issues.
  • You ensure that our content is planned and executed for mobile first, determining the best storytelling approach and what assets the reporter and photographer must gather to produce content that is complete, authoritative and shareable.
  • You ensure our daily Business section in the newspaper satisfies the target audience.
  • You deliver to the planner on time, to ensure our products are interesting every day and the reporter/photographer can build a following.
  • You ensure each content creator is the news leader in their field. They are competitive; they rarely get beat.
  • You can demonstrate ways that you coach reporters to help them be successful.

Typical Job Duties:

  • Coaches and edits the big story of the day, and owns it all the way through publication. (40%)
  • Supervises the work of reporters, with an emphasis on independent idea and content generation. Works individually with content creator by identifying areas for improvement and coaching them on how to elevate their work. (30%)
  • Works with the audience analyst to apply research in creating high quality content and marketing initiatives that best serves key audience needs. (20%)
  • Participates in community-connection discussions to advocate for audiences. (10%)
  • Monitors real-time data to direct changes tied to the data.
  • Identifies and address training needs of individuals and groups.
  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to edit and lead top-notch watchdog journalism.
  • Ability to build coalitions around evolving needs.
  • Exceptional cross-platform storytelling skills

  • Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
  • Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers’ time and money.

  • Must embrace peer-to-peer training, as both a teacher and student.

  • Writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
  • Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Communications, Journalism or equivalent in experience and education.
  • Five years of media management experience.
  • Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
  • Experience editing and shaping watchdog and investigative journalism.
