BBC Capital seeks deputy editor

We are looking to recruit an experienced online and social media-savvy journalist to join BBC Capital, a successful and rapidly expanding features section of BBC.com dedicated to the stories and issues that influence and inspire global professionals and businesses.

The role will be based in BBC Worldwide’s New York office, and will be responsible for editorially building on the site’s ongoing success, ensuring the site continues to grow, and achieves the high standards our audience associates with the BBC. The ideal candidate is an authoritative and creative writer/editor, who knows how to approach a wide range of topics in a smart and fresh way.

ROLE:

– Commissioning, editing and creating content that people like to share, including articles, galleries, videos, infographics, and other visually-driven content, which will delight a digital audience every day – both on BBC.com and on social media.

– Helping with daily production of BBC.com/capital, in conjunction with and supervised by the Capital Editor.

– Responsible for maintaining the editorial vision of the site, and helping to develop an ongoing program of content that will appeal to, and grow the audience.

REPORTS TO:

– Capital Editor

RESPONSIBILITIES:

– Commission, edit and produce content for BBC Capital

– Pitch smart, original ideas for compelling and shareable content with effective, clever headlines, captions, etc.

– Cultivate a social-media presence, and general audience awareness of the site to drive traffic and audience loyalty

– Track trends on social media, and create content around those trends

– Generate ideas for new features and story formats, and bring aboard new top-quality freelancers

– Manage production schedules, liaising with authors and other creators on a day-to-day basis

– Maintain editorial relationships with content partners, within and outside the BBC

– Maintain and update the editorial calendar and other promotional/sales materials for Ad Sales

– Take responsibility, along with the editor, for monitoring traffic and other metrics, optimizing headlines, images and more.

REQUIREMENTS:

– At least 10 years of experience of writing and editing Capital-related content, with proven experience in online/digital journalism and storytelling

– Extensive digital experience required: work with a CMS, HTML knowledge, Photoshop knowledge, familiarity and use of social media (Facebook, Reddit and beyond), with experience of commissioning and/or editing video a bonus

– Familiar with the business community, abreast of trends and issues, with a grasp of the competitive landscape and familiarity with at least some of the topics Capital covers (managing, leadership, workplace, careers, wealth, personal finance, retirement, ethics, etc)

– Global mindset

– Have a strong writing and editing background

– Must be a self-starter, problem-solver, detailed reader, and creative thinker

– Ability to work to a deadline

– Excellent communication and organizational skills
