The Austin Business Journal’s Web editor is responsible for the day-to-day management of all online content and owns the execution of the online content strategy across multiple platforms and products, including Web, email, mobile and social networks.

The Web editor is the key journalist who touches breaking news copy from ABJ reporters first, and then ultimately presents it online in various forms. It is mandatory that the candidate thrive in a fast-paced, breaking-news culture and has demonstrated content programming experience in an online environment.

The primary goal of the Web editor is to craft timely and compelling news that drives loyal engagement, grows audience and extends the Business Journal brand in the digital space. We’re seeking an evangelist for all things digital — someone who can work with all departments of the organization.

The job requires solid news judgment, strong headline writing skills and familiarity with SEO and site metrics — and someone who wants to be first to break stories with a sense of urgency. The Web editor must balance the highest standards for content with ambitious traffic and engagement objectives. In addition to working with staff- and user-generated content, the Web editor thrives on hard work and is expected to curate, report and write posts as well as produce interactive features, galleries and video. The end result should be a rich and vibrant digital experience that serves the Business Journal audience, generates user feedback and inspires robust community interaction. Working with the editors and reporters, the Web editor will assist in determining how best to present online articles and second-day stories for print.

Duties:
•Manage reporters’ digital work and edit copy to produce a constant stream of breaking news and engaging digital features on AustinBusinessJournal.com — all of which adhere to the standards of true journalism yet hold a digital edginess to them.

• Write 3-5 short news stories a day, often from press releases or other credible media reports.

•Track metrics and measure engagement with an eye towards constant improvement.

•Steer the ABJ’s main social media accounts and be an evangelist and teacher for all staff to excel on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Reddit.

•Help support Audience Development and other departments in growing newsletter subscribers in key vertical industries and specific companies.

•Work with editors, reporters and other stakeholders to plan new content and features.

•Help staff identify and deploy tactics to meet traffic and engagement goals.

•Generate daily analytics that inform newsroom decisions and promote cross-departmental collaboration.

•Work collaboratively with peers in design, research, and technology.

•Produce and maintain all market-specific content on the business journal’s website, including local promotions, updated staff lists, rate information, editorial calendars.

•Handle coding and uploading of weekly print edition files to bizjournals.com.

•Gather and upload selected graphics, photos, informational graphics and info boxes to bizjournals.com.

•Regularly participate in and attend Business Journal sponsored events.

•Take on any other assignment made by managers.

•Work cooperatively and collaboratively with all colleagues and professionally with sources.

Skills:

•Strong headline writing and copy-editing skills

•Familiarity with AP Style

•SEO experience

•Track record of amassing a social media following

•Video production experience a plus

•Demonstrated use of databases to build interactive elements and features

•Data entry for content management systems

•Html skills a plus

•Excel and/or spreadsheet tools and management

Experience:
•At least 2-3 years experience in online news operation
