Do you love data? Help us revolutionize storytelling at Albuquerque Business First.

ABF is a part of American City Business Journals and we are looking for a data journalist, responsible for telling the story of business through data.

The Harvard Business Review says data science is the sexiest job of this century. This is a great opportunity for a person with a passion for research, zeal for accuracy and a love for telling stories with numbers.

Our data journalist will join a feisty, award-winning staff that’s breaking news, experimenting with new media and going all out to cover Albuquerque’s struggle to reinvent its economy.

The primary mission of the data journalist is to dig deep into available business data to compile high-profile research projects and weekly Top 25 Lists while maintaining Business First’s database of companies and sources.

The data journalist will also use business data to create compelling, highly readable stories for print and Web, from in-depth cover stories to short news items.

They’ll help us develop new lists, products and reports each year.

Skills

Candidates should possess strong news judgment, analysis and writing skills. Additionally, candidates must also:

  • Have experience with computer data-management applications and a proven ability to work with databases and spreadsheets to find patterns and stories.
  • Be self-motivated and exhibit the ability to juggle multiple projects in various stages of completion, while being attentive to detail.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be conceptual, as the data journalist works collaboratively with the editing team to brainstorm and execute new sections and other newsworthy products.

Experience

A proven track record with data gathering and reporting, ideally with business news, is required. Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Working conditions and physical requirements

General office environment. Extensive computer use required. Some travel required. Ability to work flexible work schedules, including nights, weekends and holidays.

To apply, email resume, cover letter and three to five published clips to Editor-in-Chief Rachel Sams at rsams@bizjournals.com. No phone calls please.
