Wall Street Journal investigative reporter John Carreyrou recounts some of the more unusual experiences he had while uncovering the story of Theranos’s business practices.

Carreyrou recently discovered that a Theranos employee created a Space Invaders video game where the reporter’s face is the target.

“It’s another one of the crazy twists in this crazy story that has consumed the past three and a half years of my life,” said Carreyrou.

He noted that company investors did not do proper due diligence before putting their money into the company. Others were influenced by the charisma of CEO Elizabeth Holmes.

“I’ve been a reporter for 20 years, and in all those years I’ve never encountered the amount of push back and the amount of resistance and counterattacks, frankly, that I encountered reporting this story,” said Carreyrou.

Holmes called Carreyrou’s reporting “completely false.” The facts of the stories, however, have proven to be true, and Holmes has never agreed to speak to Carreyrou.

“I loved Space Invaders growing up,” added Carreyrou.
