Walter Russell Mead will become a columnist for the Wall Street Journal opinion pages, writing the weekly Global View column on foreign affairs.

He will start on Feb. 6.

Walter is a highly regarded journalist and historian of American foreign policy with a unique voice at a time of new and growing challenges to global order,” said Journal editorial page editor Paul Gigot in a statement. “I’m delighted that he will help our readers make sense of the political, economic and technological forces reshaping the world in the U.S. and abroad.”

Mead has been writing for the Journal on a biweekly basis for nearly a year. He is the James Clarke Chace Professor of Foreign Affairs and Humanities at Bard College and previously taught American foreign policy at Yale University.

He was editor at large of the American Interest magazine and is a Distinguished Scholar at the Hudson Institute. He is also the author of several books, including the award-winning “Special Providence: American Foreign Policy and How it Changed the World” in 2001.
