JohN WaggonerJohn Waggoner, the longtime investment columnist at USA Today who took a buyout earlier this year, has been hired by Investment News.

Waggoner will be a senior columnist and also cover mutual funds. He starts Jan. 4.

“I was extremely impressed with the staff and management at Investment News,” said Waggoner in an email to Talking Biz News. “They’re smart, deeply sourced and excellent at covering investment advisers.”

Waggoner was with USA Today for nearly 26 years before leaving in May. He wrote a weekly personal finance column, which was nominated nominated twice by Gannett for a Pulitzer. He also covered stocks, mutual funds, bonds and the economy on daily basis, typically producing 130 or so stories a year — not including web-only stories.

He’s also the author of three books: “Bailout: What the Rescue of Bear Stearns and the Credit Crisis Mean for Your Investments,” “The Fast Forward MBA in Investing” and “Money Madness: Strange Schemes and Extraordinary Manias on and off Wall Street.”

Waggoner is a 1981 graduate of Northeastern University.
