David Craig, the New York bureau chief and markets editor at USA Today, has been put in charge of the Money section.
In addition, Jon Swartz has been named tech editor and San Francisco bureau chief. The moves were announced internally on Wedneesday.
Craig has been appointed managing editor of a combined money/tech team, based in New York, said David Callaway, USA Today’s editor, in an email to Talking Biz News. He will remain New York bureau chief.
“Both are creative, experienced journalists who are known well in their communities,” said Callaway. “In addition to their journalistic talents, part of the plan is to spread out the decision-making process in the newsroom across the U.S. and into some of its most important financial/tech markets.”
In addition, Rodney Brooks was named deputy managing editor, personal finance. Jim Henderson remains in his role as managing editor of the print Money section. And Doug Carroll’s economics team moves to Money team.
Swartz has been at USA Today since 2000. Swartz has been a journalist reporting on various tech issues since 1987 with past stints at MacWEEK, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Forbes.
“Essentially, I will coordinate tech coverage from SF while continuing to write,” said Swartz in an email to Talking Biz news. “The idea is I raise the paper’s profile in Silicon Valley with more resources and significantly more digital content, especially video.”
Callaway became editor of USA Today earlier this year. He previously was editor in chief of Marketwatch.com, a Dow Jones & Co. property.
