Toledo Business Journal accused of plagiarism

The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland has expressed concern that the Toledo Business Journal n has reprinted an article the Fed published without giving it credit.

Jon Chavez of the Toledo Blade writes, “‘We’re very happy when people use our information because we want to distribute it and we want people to use the research that we do,’ June Gates, a spokesman for the Fed in Cleveland, said Friday.

“‘But we do ask that people provide proper credit when they use our information,’ she added.

“Ms. Gates said a reader of the Toledo Business Journal, a publication of Maumee-based Telex Communications Inc., contacted her recently to say that an article that appeared in the August edition of the Business Journal appeared to be a Fed-produced article that had appeared in the Fed’s Economic Trends publication, but that no attribution crediting either the Fed or the article’s authors, O. Emre Ergungor and Daniel Kolliner, appeared with it.

“The reprint was published verbatim by the Business Journal.

“‘I sent a note to the Toledo Business Journal basically saying someone had seen something of ours in there and asking for an explanation,’ Ms. Gates said. ‘It’s possible something omitted the sourcing and we had not been credited accidentally. I really don’t know what happened because I have not had an opportunity to talk with them.'”
