The role of the business press

Craig Ey, the editor of the Birmingham Business Journal, tries to answer that question in his column in the latest issue.

Ey writes, “It’s a question I get from time-to-time – and it came up again last week after our story ‘Birmingham Business Alliance offers no 2010 legislative agenda’ appeared on the cover of last week’s Birmingham Business Journal.

“To answer the question, I believe the role of the business press is no different from the role of any other news media. Only our subject matter is different. We strive to give you, our readers, accurate news and information that will help you manage your business, your career and your money more effectively.

“If we’re doing our jobs well, our role sometimes brings us into conflict with some major institutions, such as large employers, government agencies and influential organizations. That was definitely the case last week with the Birmingham Business Alliance, the region’s most important business advocacy organization.”
